About the Group
The Group was formed in May 1995, and is known locally as
"Heartbeats". At the time there was no support or general information available
to cardiac patients and partners, other than that which the Cardiac Unit staff
could provide.
A meeting was held in April 1995 at Shire Hall, thanks to The efforts of cardiac
patient Peter Hargrave, his wife Ann and with the support of Nurse Kathy Teideman
and Dr John Bell F.R.C.P. Cardiac Consultant at Battle Hospital.
The group was established and has grown ever since.
We hold monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at
Calcot Community Centre, High View, Calcot, Reading at 7-30pm
For those in the Newbury area we hold meetings on the second Wednesday of the month, in the
St John's Church Hall, St John's Road, Newbury at 7-30pm
And for those in the Wokingham, Woodley, and Earley area we hold
meetings on the forth Wednesday in the month at the St Nicholas Church Hall,
Earley at 7-30pm
We usually have a visiting speaker or other entertainment. There
is also an opportunity to chat with other patients and enjoy refreshments
together.
To support a family atmosphere, we have weekly walks, exercise classes, skittle
and quiz evenings. In addition we publish a bi-monthly newsletter, which
contains group news, various other topics and a diary of events. This is sent to all members.
The Group has a team of trained Support Volunteers know as Listening Ears, who
can talk with patients, and partners, about various problems, to help ease the
stress and answer questions. They have all experienced heart problems, but
ARE NOT Qualified to give
medical advice. They can visit at home or speak on the telephone.
We are a Volunteer Support Group, self supporting and non-profit making. But we do have a good laugh along the way. So drop in and have a smile at least.
Remember you are not alone, we are just a phone call away
